How is gluten-free beer brewed?

Good news for everyone who eats (or drinks) gluten-free: starting in September, we are officially allowed to label our gluten-free beer with the Crossed Grain certification mark from the Dutch Coeliac Society.
We have been brewing gluten-free beers such as Hop Art and Pilsener for years, but thanks to extensive lab tests and independent verification, we can now also put the official certification mark on our beers.
What exactly is gluten-free beer?
Gluten are proteins naturally found in grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. For people with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, even a small amount can cause symptoms. Therefore, it is important that gluten-free truly means gluten-free, and this is strictly controlled.
A beer may only be called 'gluten-free' if it contains less than 20 ppm (parts per million) of gluten. In our case, we mainly brew with barley malt, so with gluten, but through smart techniques and careful control, we ensure that ultimately hardly any gluten remains.

Does gluten-free beer taste different?
Nope.
Our Hop Art, Pilsener, and other gluten-free beers taste just as you've come to expect from us: hoppy, fresh, sessionable, and super delicious. You won't notice they're gluten-free. And that's exactly the intention.

How do we brew gluten-free beer?
At vandeStreek, we primarily brew our beers with barley malt. In the final phase of the brewing process, we add a special enzyme that breaks down gluten.
But it doesn't stop there.
Each batch is carefully tested in our own lab. And then we also send the beer to an independent external lab that determines whether it actually remains below the legal standard of 20 ppm. Only then does it receive the 'gluten-free' stamp and – from now on – the Crossed Grain certification mark on the label.
So we test a lot, often, and strictly. So you can enjoy it with peace of mind.

Where can you find our gluten-free beers?
Our gluten-free beers are now available in more and more places: in our webshop, at various supermarkets and liquor stores, and of course in horeca establishments that serve our beer.
On the label, you will soon recognize them by the official logo of the Dutch Coeliac Society. And believe us: not only does it look professional, but it also means that we are 100% committed to the safety and quality of this beer.
