Pop-up bar in the Dom Tower

From February 29th to March 3rd, the Dom Tower will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Café Theater Festival in a unique way, by transforming the tower into a cultural beer café. This special occasion marks a collaboration with the Utrecht brewery vandeStreek, which has aged a special beer in the Dom Tower itself in honor of the festival.

The Café Theater Festival, which has enriched the city of Utrecht for two decades with its unique blend of theater and hospitality, finds a spectacular location in the Michael's Chapel of the Dom Tower, 12 meters high. Visitors can enjoy theater and culture while tasting an exclusive quadrupel beer, aged in whiskey barrels in the cellars of the tower, celebrating the innovative spirit of both the brewery and the festival.

The beer, named Torenwachter (Tower Guardian), refers to the legend of the tower guardian who allegedly ran an illegal cafe in the Dom Tower. This story connects the history of the Dom Tower with the contemporary pop-up cafe, which now, completely legally, welcomes visitors. Sander van de Streek, one of the founders of the Utrecht brewery, says: “This beer, of course, had to become iconic. That's why we chose a heavy Belgian beer style that matches well with the soft whiskey barrels we selected.”

Ronald van de Streek adds: “Every time I saw the Dom Tower, I thought about how wonderful it would be to age beer in this icon of Utrecht. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to age beer on top of the dome – but we found a suitable spot in the cellar. The Torenwachter has therefore been aged in the ancient cellars that are not regularly accessible to the public.”

Dom Tower Guided Tours

The Dom Tower is open to visitors all year round. Daily guided tours are available, where visitors, accompanied by a guide, climb to the top. Along the way, they learn more about the history and restoration of the tower.

This also applies to the weekend of the pop-up beer café. Visitors who book the 4:00 PM tour can, of course, visit the pop-up café afterward for a refreshing beer.
